Forget everything you think you know about gay people. Especially if you’re a leftist.
The left imagines gay and trans people in a certain waypeople in a certain way — progressive, non-religious, and all a part of one big community. But a new survey from Buzzfeed rubbishes all of that. The shocking results undercut the overarching themes behind identity politics, and call into question whether "LGBT" people can really be viewed as a collective, let alone an oppressed group.
As it turns out, gay people hold a wide range of views on things like religion, politics, and even sex. According to the poll, more than half of gay, bi, and trans Americans are Christian. The left frequently derides devout Christians as homophobic bigots — especially if they dare decline to bake a cake — but clearly, something about that logic doesn’t add up. If Christianity was such a hateful ideology, it wouldn’t have half the gay community on board.
The results of this poll also unravel another left-wing talking point, the idea that gay, bi, and trans people are somehow an oppressed class in the U.S. today. Almost 90 percent of respondents said that they had never faced workplace discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation. Obviously it’s concerning that 10 percent of sexual minority Americans are still being treated unfairly, but the 90 percent clearly contradicts the left’s narrative of victimization.
If anything, sexual minority folks are doing better than most straight people. On average, lesbians make more money than straight women, and gay men now officially outearn straight men too. In both cases, gay men and lesbians made about 10 percent more than their straight peers.
If that’s oppression, sign me up!
As it turns out, "GLBT" Americans have a socially conservative streak. 60 percent believe that getting married is a “strong political/social statement,” and 86 percent want to tie the knot themselves. But our political heresy doesn’t stop there — some gay people are even conservatives.
Yes, it’s true that 59 percent of gay, bi, and trans people identify as liberal. So it’s no surprise that Democratic politicians take our votes for granted — but they really shouldn’t be so self-assured. 25 percent of sexual minorities self-identify as moderates, while 11 percent lean conservative — 14 percent even voted for President Trump.
So what’s the significance of all this? It means that the leftist view of gay/trans collectivism is falling apart. Gay people are individuals, and we aren’t all alike — whether that concerns religion, politics, or anything else. In fact, non-heterosexual people don’t really have all that much in common — so I’m starting to question why we still all get lumped in together.
When Buzzfeed asked a bisexual man from Texas for his thoughts on "LGBT unity," he said “I’m not trying to be a part of that movement.” After all, isn’t there something fundamentally reductionist about grouping people of all races, life experiences, ideologies, and personalities under one big sexual umbrella? Basically, the "LGBT" label is just about lumping together everyone who’s not straight.
But we’re not necessarily a community with common interests, as much as we are a collection of individuals. Maybe after these new poll results, leftists will finally start to see that.
